Since The Harvard Black Men’s Forum (BMF) was founded in the 1970s, it has developed into one of the most recognized and celebrated organizations on Harvard’s campus.
Our history
The Harvard Black Men’s Forum (BMF), originally founded in the 1970s, was revitalized in 1999 by a group of undergraduates to create a safe space for black men on Harvard’s campus. Since then, BMF has grown from a small-scale initiative of Harvard students to one of the most recognized and celebrated organizations on Harvard’s campus. In addition to sustaining dialogue on social issues relevant to the Harvard campus at large, we also focus on cultivating our membership both academically and professionally.
Our Mission
As an organization, we strive to foster a supportive atmosphere of brotherhood among the black masculine identifying community on campus. We are concerned with political, social, and cultural issues regarding black men on Harvard University’s campus and beyond, and we promote greater awareness and understanding of these issues through all appropriate means, including publications, meetings, seminars, and active engagement with the community.
Our pledge
As a member of the Black Men's Forum, it is my duty to uphold the standards of this organization: namely Brotherhood, Masculinity, and Fidelity. I will prove myself a good member by making a conscious effort to get to know my fellow members on a personal level and by providing a means for advice to those who are in need. I will demonstrate my character by serving my community to the best of my ability and promoting solidarity amongst all Black identities.I will prove myself faithful by attending meetings regularly and by supporting the events and programs sponsored by the Black Men’s Forum. In accomplishing these duties I will best represent myself, the Black men* on this campus, and those throughout the world.
